Hey Marcel, hope all is well with you.
As I was sitting here looking at the rising moon in a the persistant daylight sky, it occured to me that we could offer an international Moon Shot photo.
We all see the same moon. . .how about a photo of it?
Maybe next month?

Great idea!
A good occasion may be new years eve ; at 19:11 GMT, it'll be a blue moon.

Rain and clouds are in the forecast.
If I don't get a shot, I'll try again next month.

I'm afraid the same goes for the Netherlands; it's a gray sky at the moment and I don't expect it to change significantly anywhere today.
Better luck next year. :-)

Well, the moon really doesn't look blue during a blue moon, so there's nothing special to see really. [:p]

Gray and raining today at aprox 2 pm. Prognosis looks poor for a moon shot in 2009.
Maybe the clouds will break, but I'm looking forward to 2010 for the next chance at a moon shot.
Happy New Year everone everywhere!

Here's yesterdays moon, shot with the FA 50mm f/1.4.
Yes, I know, I should have taken the 135mm, but even with that the moon is just a speck.
First off the entire shot for a sense of scale.

Then the 100% crop of the moon in it.

Just a speck...with some detail in it. [;)]
Technicalities: Friday January 1st 2009, 23:30 GMT+1, Weert, the Netherlands, Pentax K20D, ISO200, f/10, 1/200th, -1⅔ EV (in full M (manual) mode)

Next full moon is jan 30
Shutter speed should match the ISO and f stop at 16 - but try 11, full manual mode.
So, even if the moon is coming up over the landscape, expose for the moon as it is in full sun.

I had the feeling that it was underexposed too much at f/16 and even at f/11. (at ISO200, 1/200th), so that's why I decided to use a larger aperture.

However, what I do find very intriguing is the histogram that's available with this shot ; it's almost empty, very little information is stored in the photo.
I understand that there's a lot of "nothing" in it, but even the lit parts there's very little info:

It's definitely not a fluent curve....[?]

I would generally set my camera to 1/125th at f5.6 (ISO 200) when using my zoom lens to photograph the moon and then bracket a couple of stops either side of that to choose the best exposure.

Well, the full moon is in full sun.
If its a cloudless sky. . .then set the exposure for photographing an object in bright sun.
Set shutter speed to the ISO number.
Set f-stop to 16 and bracket to include f11
That should do it.

100 percent and cropped to this size:

This shot was taken from the deck of the Celebrity cruise ship "Millenium X" on Jan 30, 2010 at a location in the Carribean near St. Lucia island.
Wind was at gale force but no warning had been issued to stay off deck. Deck furniture was lashed to the railings. I was the only one on deck.
My lense cap came off, dropped to the deck and immediately skipped and skittered ten, twenty feet before lifting off and over the edge of the deck.
I had set the camera to manual, ISO 1000, shutter speed at 1/1000 and bracketed around f11
The wind was buffeting me around and I could not sharply focus with certainty. The broad heavy camera strap kept blowing up over my head - I had to catch it under my arm. For a few moments I feared that a heavy sudden gust might sweep me overboard into the darkness.
This was the best shot of the lot. When I returned to our stateroom my wife asked where I had been. "Just taking a few shots of the moon." I replied.

Judging by the shot focussing accurately and keeping the camera still for more than 1/1000th at those windspeeds and under those conditions is pretty hard. [;)]

But ehm, do I read it correctly that you and your wife went on a luxurious tropical cruise and didn't rub it in our faces by showing us the sunny "look-at-me-I'm-doing-absolutely-nothing-and-I'm-loving-every-bit-of-it" pictures? [oO]

Thanks for not rubbing it in! [:D]
